Otolaryngology
Head and Neck Surgery is a specialty concerned with the medical and surgical treatment of the ears, nose, throat (ENT) and the related structures of the head and neck. Otolaryngologists are trained in the treatment of traditional ENT problems, such as hoarseness, facial reconstruction, the surgery of benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck; and also in the management of patients with hearing loss and balance disorders, the endoscopic examination of air and food passages and the treatment of allergic, sinus, laryngeal, thyroid and esophageal disorders. ENTs treat virtually all diseases above the shoulders with the exception of eye-related and brain-based disorders, which fall under the specialties of ophthalmology and neurology, respectively. To qualify for the American Board of Otolaryngology certification examination a physician must complete five or more years of post-M.D. specialty training.
